Burnout is not solely psychological. It is physiological.
Prolonged stress activates the autonomic nervous system. When sympathetic activation (“fight or flight”) remains elevated without sufficient recovery, regulation becomes impaired.
Polyvagal Theory (Porges, 2011) explains how chronic activation reduces cognitive flexibility, emotional resilience, and executive functioning. Many professionals continue performing at a high level while operating in a state of nervous system dysregulation.
This explains why burnout can coexist with apparent competence.
Recovery, therefore, requires more than time off. It requires recalibration.
Burnout and Neurodivergence
Emerging research highlights that neurodivergent professionals may experience burnout differently and more intensely.
Raymaker et al. (2020) introduced the concept of autistic burnout, describing cumulative exhaustion resulting from prolonged masking and adaptation in environments not designed for neurodivergent cognition.
Globally, many neurodivergent professionals operate within high-demand systems requiring sustained social and cognitive adaptation. This creates additional energy expenditure that is often invisible.
Burnout recovery must account for individual neurological differences rather than apply uniform productivity models.

Effective burnout recovery integrates both systemic awareness and individual regulation.

Sustainable leadership requires sustainable physiology.
